Meet The 2015 Hall Of Fame

2015 HOF Inductee
Mark Alexander ‘76

Mark Alexander, a student leader at CBA and the University of Notre Dame, has had a distinguished career in business and philanthropy. He served as CEO of Suburban Propane from 1996 to 2009, overseeing significant growth and acquisitions. Alexander built a talented team and was proud to step down when it was their time to lead.

After leaving the energy sector, he founded Alexander Investors, focusing on private equity and real estate. He now dedicates most of his time to the Joyful Heart Foundation, where he has been an active board member since 2009 and currently serves as chair, guiding the Foundation’s strategic planning.

Alexander also contributes to Notre Dame’s Mendoza College of Business as a member of the Business Advisory Council. He and his wife, Kathleen, live in Blauvelt, NY, where they are involved in community activities and support local recreational and youth programs. They have two children, Brittni and Connor.

Brother William Martin, FSC

Born March 23, 1937, in Glens Falls, NY, William John Martin attended St. Teresa’s Grammar School and Christian Brothers Academy (CBA) in Albany. His time at CBA inspired him to join the Christian Brothers, entering the Novitiate in Barrytown, NY, in June 1955 as Brother Christian William. He earned a BS in Physics from Catholic University of America (1960) and an MS in Chemistry from Kansas State (1969).

Martin taught at CBA Lincroft from 1960 to 1970, covering physics, chemistry, math, and religion, and moderated various sports programs. He served as Vice Principal and Principal at CBA Syracuse, then Principal at CBA Albany until 1993. Since then, he has resided at the Christian Brothers Community in Lincroft, serving as Director of the St. La Salle Auxiliary and Director of Development. He chaired the Middle States Association Visiting Committee for 15 years and met Sen. Joe Biden during a visit to Archmere Academy.

Denis J. Gallagher ’72

Denis J. Gallagher ’72 is a prominent figure in the school bus transportation industry, leading North America’s third-largest provider of these services. He founded Student Transportation Inc. in 1997, which now operates over 12,500 vehicles across 300 districts in the U.S. and Canada. As chairman and CEO, Gallagher oversees strategic operations, investor relations, and public financing. Previously, he was senior VP at Laidlaw Passenger Services, aiding in market expansion and integration of acquisitions. Gallagher began his career at Coast Cities School Buses Inc., a company founded by his grandfather. He earned a BS in business administration from Monmouth University and has been an influential figure in both transportation and entertainment, serving as chairman of Charliewood Pictures LLC and a board member of Novo Media Group. Gallagher lives in Charleston, SC, with his wife, Mary, and their four children.

John Coyle ’89

John Coyle ’89 is a distinguished distance runner who significantly contributed to CBA’s track and cross-country legacy. Notably, he won the 1989 Dr. William J. Zapcic Award, honoring the senior who exemplifies CBA’s ideals. At CBA, Coyle helped secure multiple Shore Conference and state championships, setting numerous records still standing today. He was a key member of the 1988 Penn Relays Championship of America team and was inducted into the Shore Track Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2014. At Notre Dame, Coyle was an All-American runner, 1990 U.S. Junior Cross-Country Champion, and team captain. After graduating with a BA and MBA, he joined the Nike Farm Team and then worked in investment banking and technology. Coyle is also a dedicated coach and advocate for Catholic education. He resides in Silicon Valley with his wife, Mary, and their four children.

Christopher D. Johnson ‘75

Dr. Christopher D. Johnson ’75 is an acclaimed orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine specialist, renowned for his innovative surgical techniques. A proud Jersey Shore native, he completed dual majors in chemistry and physics at Tulane University before attending UMDNJ-Rutgers Medical School and finishing his orthopedic residency at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital. Johnson also trained at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. He completed a fellowship in hand and microsurgery at the Indiana Center for Surgery of the Hand. Johnson is an active member of professional societies such as the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and the American Society for Surgery of the Hand. He also teaches at Monmouth Medical Center and volunteers with Health Volunteers Overseas in Honduras. Johnson enjoys sailing and coaching his children’s sports teams. He lives in Oceanport with his wife, Nancy, and their two children.

Bob Roma ‘75

Bob Roma ’75 is celebrated for his remarkable contributions to CBA’s basketball legacy, holding long-standing records in scoring and rebounding. During his four years at CBA, Roma helped lead the team to two state championships, including the undefeated 1972-1973 season. He scored over 1,000 points as a junior and finished with 1,671 points and 1,256 rebounds. Roma continued his career at Princeton University, becoming the sixth player in school history to surpass 1,000 points and competing in the postseason. Drafted by the Kansas City Kings in 1979, he also played professionally in Israel and England. Roma now resides in Collegeville, Pennsylvania, where he owns an awning installation business. He and his wife, Elise, enjoy skiing, biking, and golfing with their two adult children. Roma’s impact on CBA’s basketball program remains significant, reflecting his dedication and skill.

Paul Caverly ’64

Paul Caverly ’64 is a dedicated community leader and advocate from Belmar, New Jersey. After graduating from CBA, he attended St. Gregory’s in Oklahoma and later Monmouth College. Caverly began his career as New Jersey field director for the United States Brewers Association and later served as District Representative for Congressman James Howard. His public service includes roles as commissioner of Belmar’s governing body, executive director of the Belmar and Neptune Housing Authorities, and chairman of the South Monmouth Sewage Authority. Active in local community organizations, Caverly was Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus and helped launch the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Belmar. In 2015, he was honored as the Grand Marshall of the parade. Caverly has been a member of CBA’s Alumni Board of Trustees, overseeing fundraising efforts, and enjoys traveling and spending time with his grandchildren.

1998 Swim Team

The 1998 Varsity Swim Team achieved a historic milestone by winning CBA’s first NJSIAA Non-Public “A” State Championship. Led by senior Peter Economou and juniors Conor MacDonald and Vito Chiaravalloti, the team displayed remarkable depth and skill. On February 17, 1998, they secured their place in the state finals by winning the 400m freestyle relay with a team of Rick Schibell, Economou, Matt Titko, and Chiaravalloti. In the state finals, they excelled by winning 9 of 11 events. Key victories included Bryant Eadon in the 200m and 500m freestyle, Conor MacDonald in the 200m IM, Vito Chiaravalloti in the 50m and 100m freestyle, and Wes Donnelly in the 100m butterfly. The team’s dominance led to a decisive 104-66 victory over Holy Spirit, marking a historic achievement for CBA Swimming.
