- CBA Alumni
The CBA community proudly celebrates Joseph V. Popolo Jr., Class of 1985, on his recent confirmation as United States Ambassador to the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Confirmed by the U.S. Senate on October 8, 2025, Popolo will formally assume his post in The Hague later this month after presenting his credentials to King Willem-Alexander.
A proud and active CBA alumnus, Popolo brings to the diplomatic stage a distinguished career in global business, philanthropy, and public service. He is the founder of Charles and Potomac Capital, LLC, an investment firm focused on technology, energy, healthcare, media, and real estate. He is also widely known for his leadership at Freeman Company, where he served as President (2001–2008) and CEO (2008–2019), guiding the company through major international growth.
At his Senate confirmation hearing, Popolo emphasized his focus on trade, security cooperation, and emerging technologies, and expressed his deep respect for the Dutch people and their longstanding partnership with the United States:
“I admire the Dutch people and their longstanding partnership with the U.S.,” said Popolo. “As an entrepreneur, CEO, and philanthropist, I have focused on bridging differences, building consensus, and delivering results, and I am confident I will do the same in our relationship with the Netherlands if I’m confirmed. I look forward to the opportunity of building on the legacy of this great friendship and important alliance.”
Popolo and his wife Christine have been deeply involved in philanthropic efforts, particularly in education and athletics. Together, they have supported numerous initiatives at Boston College, including the Popolo Family Executive Directorship at the Shea Center for Entrepreneurship, the Popolo Family Running Back Scholarship, and the endowment of the Edward Connelly Offensive Coordinator position in honor of his maternal grandfather.
Their family’s commitment to education continues through their three children—Katherine (Kit), Class of 2020, and sons Joseph III (Buck), Class of 2023, and Connor, Class of 2025—all graduates of Boston College’s Carroll School of Management.
Ambassador Popolo’s path from CBA to the global diplomatic stage is a powerful reminder of the enduring impact of a Lasallian education and the values instilled at Christian Brothers Academy.
Congratulations to Joseph V. Popolo Jr. ’85 on this extraordinary honor—and thank you for representing the CBA community with purpose, integrity, and leadership on the world stage.
